1949 Blue Sheaffer Statesman Touchdown Fountain Pen, 14k Open Nib, Restored EUC

Description: This is a beautiful 1949 pastel blue restored pneumatic fill (called touchdown) Sheaffer fountain pen. If you are new to fountain pens, or Sheaffer touchdown models, a quick search on YouTube will explain exactly how to fill. Some people find it counterintuitive, so be sure to get instructions and save yourself the frustration. The latex ink sac has been replaced & secured with shellack. The gasket has also been changed on the touchdown filler (inside pen body). The medium 14 karat gold nib has been disassembled, ultrasonically cleaned, and reassembled. Once filled, it writes nicely, leaning towards the wetter side- but just barely. There are no cracks on the barrel or cap. All hardware is present and in good working condition. The threads are solid and the pen cap stays on as it should with just a half twist. I’d say the color is pastel blue but it’s just a couple of shades darker than Tiffany blue. Only the pen is included in this listing and it will be sent with the nib clean and without ink (keeps the nib from getting gummed up with dried ink). You will need to purchase some ink. I used blue Pelikan Tinte' 4001 for the video. Further info: I could only find one year that sheaffer made a white dot with the touchdown filler, open nib, & the 1/4” gold band with a semi transparent nib holder section : 1949. The serial number on the nib is pretty much useless for determining model or year made (see below). The number on the front and back of the nib is I94573, but it is now believed to have nothing to do with the pen specifications at all. A search of “look what the Katz drug in” does a great job of explaining what the serial number was almost certainly used for and why it is on both the inside and on the outside of the the 14K nib.
