Much like the 1944-D known as the FS-901 with engraved initials, this 1944-P touts the same hand-engraving, however has not yet been previously attributed by Fivaz and Stanton. As it is, the designer's initials on the reverse were omitted from the original die and were subsequently hand-engraved. Fivaz and Stanton notate that other dates and mints within the series are known without the designer's initials, and will be added at a later date. This is one of them. Just like the Denver issue FS-901, the initials on this variety are not nearly as clear and precise as the normal hub die transfer initials, especially for what would be expected on this grade of coin.
