Historical Significance The German Waffenamt issued an order to design the VK4501(H) (later known as the PzKpfw VI Ausf. E) in May 1941, just before Operation Barbarossa. Henschel und Sohn of Kassel built the heavily armored chassis, while Krupp developed the turret. The PzKpfw VI Ausf. E was one of the first German tanks to feature a torsion bar with eight interleaved wheels, supporting the weight of the 57-ton tank. It mounted an 8.8cm KwK36 L/56 cannon and two MG34 machine guns for close support. By the end of the war, 1,354 units had been produced, some from the Wegmann assembly line.
