Description: Very rare 1940s Stanford Indian doll, in beautiful condition. Measures 14" (35.5 cm.). The head, hands and feet are of brown cotton sateen, the pants of a similar material in red, and the shirt and the fringe a soft felt. The famed caricature depiction of a Native American was designed as the mascot of Stanford University and used throughout most of the 20th century. The character with stylized nose and large googly eyes is wearing a felt letter "S", and was designed by Jack Dixon in 1938. This one is in particularly excellent condition, complete with the very rare original red feather, and no damage to speak of. I have only seen a few of this rare doll for sale over the years and this is by far in the best condition of them all. In the 1970s and 80s, this mascot came under controversy and, finally, in 1991, was changed to a redwood tree motif, but the Indian still captures people's hearts more. This doll is from the late 1940s and is a must have for anyone collecting Stanford memorabilia. He has resided in a non smoking home - only sunshine and household dust have aged this wonderful collectible.
