Small bent/tear at upper left corner (outside actual image itself). Please see photos for details. Born on January 4th, 1935, to Frances Wilson Carpenter and Maxey B. Carpenter in Scottsboro, Alabama, Max split his early years between northeast Alabama and Washington D.C. where his mother Frances worked for the Federal Government. Outgoing and athletic, Max excelled at football and was the starting right tackle for Washington D.C.'s Woodrow Wilson High School team that would win the D.C. city championship in 1953. Max met the love of his life Mary (Stockman) at Wilson High and their life stories would be linked together forever going forward. Max graduated from Wilson High in 1953 and followed Mary to Oregon State College on a football scholarship the following year. Max graduated with a degree in Forestry and in a separate ceremony was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Later, Max earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the Missouri School of Mines. Max's duty assignments with the Army over the next 28 years included Munich, Germany, Seoul, Korea, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, Vietnam, Fort Benning, Georgia, Springfield, Virginia, Rolla, Missouri, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and Fort Lewis, Washington.
