Description: This is is late use in 1938 of the 5,12, and 20 cents SJ stamps which with a GVI 3cents definitive make up the 20 cents rate for registration and 20 cents for the foreign letter rate, first weight step. The stamps are cancelled QUARTIER MILITAIRE 15 August 1939. The cancel is not the most clear, but it is supported by the registration label. The front has a large oval violet cachet of the US customs department stating the item was free of duty. On the reverse are transit marks of NEW YORK and NEWARK and receipt mark of IRVINGTON NJ dated 12 November 1939. The transit time was nearly 3 months and included the start of World War 2.
