Description: Interesting Vintage/Antique book on cartoon drawing, authored by E.C. Matthews, with 200 Illustrations by Zim. Published in 1928 by Frederick J. Drake, but there is a paste-over where this publisher is identified on the title page. This paste-over states, "Trade Supplied By J.S. Ogilvie...", suggesting that this was a distribution attribution, not a publishing attribution. The book overall is in GOOD CONDITION. There is moderate to heavy corner board wear, light edge wear, some, soil marks on front board around the subtitle. There are 162 solidly bound pages with no previous owner marks (a few pencil markings on front endpaper were erased). However, there was a moisture stain on page tops which impinged a bit onto the top edges of pages. It was light through about page 60, and only faintly seen after that. This book is subtitled, A Complete Course in Cartooning. Here is an overview of the book: "The book is designed to teach readers the skills and techniques needed to draw humorous cartoons and illustrations. The book is divided into several sections, each of which covers a different aspect of cartooning. The first section of the book covers the basics of cartooning, including the different types of cartooning styles and the tools and materials needed to get started. The second section focuses on drawing characters, including how to create different facial expressions, body postures, and gestures. The third section of the book covers the art of storytelling through cartoons, including how to create a compelling narrative and how to use humor effectively. The fourth section focuses on advanced techniques, such as shading, perspective, and color theory. Throughout the book, Matthews provides step-by-step instructions and helpful tips and tricks to help readers improve their cartooning skills. The book is filled with illustrations and examples, making it easy for readers to follow along and practice the techniques covered in each section." On cartoonist Eugene "Zim" Zimmerman (1862-1935) from the internet: "Zim was the founder of the so-called “Grotesque” school of caricature, and was the first caricaturist to incorporate exaggerated cartooniness not only in the faces of his subjects, but in the bodies as well. Zim worked for Puck and Judge, the two top humor magazines of their day. Zim was a prolific artist, with more than 40,000 illustrations published in his lifetime. He retired from Judge in 1897 and founded the American Association of Cartoonists and Caricaturists. He was also a writer and teacher. His columns ran in Cartoons magazine during the early years of the century, as did ads for his landmark correspondence course in cartooning." B131
