Hardcovers bound in blue cloth with George Washington's family crest on the front covers in gilt. The bindings are worn and spotted along the hinges and lesser spotting on the spines (heavier spotting on Volume I). The rear cover of Volume III has heavy spotting along the fore edge and top edge of the board. Top edges gilt. Inner hinges secure. The text is a bit toned but is generally clean. Each front paste down has a bookplate of Alfred Irenee DuPont and Jessie Ball DuPont. Alfred Irenee du Pont (1864-1935) was an American industrialist who helped run his family's gunpowder manufacturing plant based in Deleware. He married his third wife, Jessie Dew Ball (1884-1970) in 1921. Jessie Ball Du Pont was born in Northumberland County, Virginia and was an investor in her own right and helped manage the family fortune. The Du Ponts were also philanthropists, donating large sums of monies to universities and museums. Jessie Ball Du Pont also helped with the preservation of Stratford Hall Plantation in Virginia, the family home or General Robert E. Lee. In 1937 she attended the coronation of King George VI. The bookplate is very attractive and also features the Wilmington, Delaware home of the DuPonts, Nemours Mansion and Gardens. A scarce set with an interesting association.*****************************************We Always Accept Returns if the Item Does Not Match the Description.
