Description: The Rentenmark replaced the old Papiermark. Because of the economic crisis in Germany after WW1, there was no gold available to back the currency (one of the reasons for hyper-inflation which saw the cost of a loaf of bread spiral from less than a Mark to over a Million Marks!) The Reichsbank (German Central Bank) thus introduced currency backed by real goods. The new currency was backed by the land used for agriculture and business. This was mortgaged (Rente is a technical term for mortgage in German) to the tune of 3.2 billion Goldmarks, based on the 1913 wealth charge called Wehrbeitrag which had helped fund the German war effort from 1914 to 1918. Notes worth RM 3.2 billion were issued. The Rentenmark was introduced at a rate of one Rentenmark to equal one trillion (1012) old marks, with an exchange rate of one U.S. Dollar to equal 4.2 Rentenmarks. Here we are offering a genuine original Renten Pfennig dated 1924 (its only year of issue!) which is very scarce in high grade. The coin is about the size of a U.S. Nickle and struck in BRASS! The mint mark may vary but in most cases will be A (Berlin). Coin may not be the exact coin in the scan but will be of comparable condition. While supply lasts, we will ship the coin in the original holder it was placed in by a German dealer over 20 years ago, per special arrangements with his estate, at an unbelievable 30% off his marked price of 20 years ago ....10 Euros ($11). Guaranteed Lowest Price on eBay for the quality, which is nearly uncirculated. It is marked SS-VZ or VZ (Vorzueglich), which is equivalent to AU 50-55. The holder has the date, mint mark, grade and price in pencil. For more coins from this same dealer's "Nachlass" (estate) please email. Approximately 5000 different rare coins available. If you don't pick up at least one of these scarce historic German coins at our give away price, you must not have any interest in world coins in general or German coins in particular.
