Obverse: depicts Columbia facing forward holding a sword in one hand, a lamp with flame in the other; two shields/plaques to either side list the names of New York City camps; legend above: VOLUNTEERS. Reverse: central stylized American eagle, with service men to left (Army) and right ( Navy); above sketches/scenes of men positioned on a hillside (left) and a Navy ship at sea (right) with Spanish-American War Medal at center. A tablet below draped in laurel and oak branches is inscribed: PRESENTED TO/ [blank for naming]/ IN GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE/ BY THE/ CITY OF NEW YORK/ ON THE/ 25th ANNIVERSARY/ OF THE/ WAR WITH SPAIN/ JOHN F. He studied at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League with Philip Martiny and was an assistant to Augustus Saint-Gaudens from 1893 to 1898. He also attended the American Academy in Rome. Keck is known to coin collectors as having designed and modeled the 1927 Vermont Sesquicentennial Commemorative Half Dollar; the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition Commemorative Gold Dollar and for having executed both the Vermont Sesquicentennial and Lynchburg Sesquicentennial Commemorative Half Dollars. Exonumist’s are particularly fond of his U.S.S. Maine Memorial Plaque, created ten-years earlier in 1913. Keck is best known for his monuments and architectural sculpture.
