Description: This is a 1918 New York University Violet yearbook. It is 105 years old. The book begins with seven pages of photographs of scenes around the campus. Beginning on page 23, there are 29 pages of faculty, administrators and department heads. These individuals are pictured along with brief biographies. There are group photos of senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman classes. Fraternities and clubs are next represented, with many photos of members. Photos of the football teams, basketball teams, and baseball teams come next. There is extensive information and photos relating to fraternities. Among notables pictured is chemical engineer George Granger Brown (shown on page 56), athlete Howard G. Cann (shown on pages 66 and 73), and economist and journalist Lawrence Fertig (shown on page 132). George Granger Brown (1896- 1957) was president of the class of 1917. George Granger (G.G.) Brown was known not only for his intellect, vision, and career accomplishments but also for a few peculiar physical characteristics. His students and colleagues recognized his lecturer’s voice – which they could hear from well down the hallway. G.G. Brown was born in New York City on September 3, 1896. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from New York University in 1917 and after graduation took a job with the Aluminum Company of America at Massena, New York. In 1918, he served in the Chemical Warfare Service at the American University of Washington, D.C., and in 1920, while Brown was at the Union Special Machine Company of Chicago, Michigan Engineering’s chemical engineering department Chair A. H. White recruited him as an instructor in chemical engineering. In 1942, Brown was selected to succeed White as chair of the Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering. As chair, Brown concentrated on revising the curriculum, introducing undergraduate courses in thermodynamics, solid-state science, and process design. He also led a group of twelve staff members in writing the textbook, Unit Operations. This book is still available on bibliophile today. The book, published in 1950, revolutionized chemical engineering curricula. After a longstanding emphasis on specific industries, such as petroleum or chemical, this book organized curricula into teaching unit operations, or basic steps in processes. The text was promptly adopted by 115 institutions, including almost every chemical engineering department in the United States.Wikipedia writes: Howard Goodsell Cann (October 11, 1895 – December 18, 1992) was an American sportsman best known as the long-time men's basketball coach at New York University. He was also an Olympic shot putter and a college basketball and football player. He briefly attended Dartmouth College and then transferred to New York University. During his freshman year in 1914, Howard was the leading scorer on the NYU Violets men's basketball team. He was captain of the 1916–1917 football team, where he played as a tackle, a punter, and also played in the backfield. Cann's college career was interrupted by World War I. He left NYU and, along with his brother Tedford, joined the United States Navy. Howard resumed his studies at NYU in 1919, after the end of the war. Lawrence W. Fertig (1898 – 1986) was an American advertising executive and a libertarian journalist and economic commentator. Fertig wrote a weekly column for the New York World-Telegram and the New York Sun. Fertig also wrote the 1961Prosperity Through Freedom. He was the founder of Lawrence Fertig & Company, a New York City advertising and marketing firm.[1] The Hoover Institution maintains an archive of Fertig's papers. His brother was New York City lawyer and New York State Assemblyman M. Maldwin Fertig. After receiving an undergraduate degree from New York University, Fertig attended Columbia University, where he completed a master's degree in economics.
