Description: Brooksville, a city, is the seat of Hernando County, Florida with a population of 8,089 in the 2020 census. In 1850 a post office was established at Melendez, which in 1855 was listed as the Capital of Benton, now Hernando County. In 1854 it was replaced by a post office at Pierceville, which was renamed Brooksville in 1871. The city of Brooksville was incorporated in 1880. Hernando County was created in 1842 and from 1844 until 1850 it was known as Benton County. The original seat was located at “DeSoto”. This was later moved to Bayport, then Pierceville, and finally Brooksville. The first courthouse was in the home of Maj. Isaac Garrison. In 1855, a wooden courthouse was built and served until destroyed by fire in 1877. A second wooden structure was built in 1878. The current Hernando County Courthouse was built in 1913 in Brooksville. It was designed by Atlanta-based architect William Augustus Edward who designed 12 other courthouses around the south as well as academic buildings at 12 institutions in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. The courthouse been called the “Brooksville Crown” and was listed in “A Guide to Florida’s Historic architecture”, published by the University of Florida Press. It is also on this card published by “A.A. Haskell, Photographer, Brooksville” and printed by the “Commercial Colortype Co., Chicago”. It is not postmarked but is a DB, 1907-15 and would have been printed close to 1913-15, just after the building of the courthouse. The card is in excellent condition except for tape residue on the reverse with minor wear and a clean, clear image. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
