This reprint is in honor of the Russian-Armenian friendship. The album includes 329 portraits. In alphabetical order the names of the persons depicted. -------------------------------------------------- Настоящее издание представляет собой уникальное собрание тех портретов героев Отечественной войны 1812 года, "этой славной и достопамятной эпохи в истории России, которые находятся в "Военной галлерее 1812 года" в Зимнем дворце, в Санкт-Петербурге". В альбом включено 329 портретов одного размера (16 х 14 в.) в алфавитном порядке фамилий изображенных лиц. Кроме того, помещены еще 4 больших, во весь рост, портрета, находящихся в той же галерее, а именно: Императора Александра I на коне, Цесаревича и Великого Князя Константина Павловича, князя М.Б.Барклая-де-Толли и князя М.И.Голенищева-Кутузова-Смоленского. Последние портреты воспроизведены гелиогравюрой по одному на листе (листы 1-4), остальные же 329 портретов помещены по 4 на каждом листе и исполнены фототипией. Чтобы дать представление о самой "Военной галерее 1812 года" в издании воспроизводятся два общих вида этой галереи (5 и 6-ой листы издания). Все портреты, кроме большого портрета Императора Александра I, принадлежащего кисти Крюгера, написаны в первой половине двадцатых годов XIX столетия специально вызванным для этого в 1819 году в С.-Петербург английским художником, известным в то время портретистом Георгом Дау (Dawe). Многие из портретов Дау писал с натуры, иные же - с наиболее верных изображений. Вслед за собранием портретов, во второй половине книги, помещается в том же порядке справочный текст, дающий возможность ознакомиться с служебной деятельностью, преимущественно в войсках и в особенности в эпоху войны с Наполеоном, всех тех лиц, которые изображены на портретах. A scholar and an eminent historian, he made many valuable contributions to the study of Russian history in the reign of Tsar Alexander I. His works, published in Russian and French, include: diplomatic documents of Tsar Alexander I and Napoleon; a life of Tsar Alexander's close friend, Pavel Strogonov; and biographical studies of Alexander I and his wife Elizabeth Alexeievna. A political liberal, he veered towards what he called "authoritarian republicanism". He fought tirelessly for reform from within the system. His reformist views made him an oddball within his own family, and contemporary recognition of his accomplishments came more from abroad than at home. He was a member of the French Academy, Honorary Doctor of History and Philosophy from the University of Berlin, Honorary Doctor of History from Moscow University, and President of the Imperial Russian Historical Society, the Society of Pomology and the Russian Geographic Society. He fell from favour during the last part of the reign of Nicholas II, as Empress Alexandra disliked him for his liberal views. As the political situation in Russia worsened, he urged the Tsar to implement reforms, and he even participated in discussions of a palace coup. After the fall of the monarchy, he was exiled to Vologda.
