Description: This is an original 1910 National Cash Register (NCR) Model 416 crank register machine. It is Cast-iron with a Nickle plating and everything on it is original hardware and aesthetics. The whole register has the Empire Pattern that was created and designed by Tiffany. Which was a common for this Class 400 register. The Serial Number is 853171 - placing the original creation date in June of 1910. (NCR Serial Number Dates) It was previously used within a store so it does show signs of use and over the years aging. But despite the constant use of the machine, it has a functioning crank, drawer, and keys (buttons). The Top sign is missing although there are spots where the top sign would have originally been positioned. There is glass missing across the back money panel and it is cracked in along the front money panel. The original keys to open the various spots on the machine are missing. About the cash register: The Class 400 was more complex than the basic Class 300 machine. The 400 could keep track of different types of sales, such as cash, credit, or no sale. The 1909 National Cash Register Catalog describes it as follows: "All Class 400 Registers are total-adding machines and are operated by pressing in the registering keys and turning the handle. When an amount key in pressed and the handle turned the amount represented by the key is automatically recorded and added on the total-adding counter, the record is shown by figures on the indicators, a bell is rung and the cash drawer thrown open. All registers of this class are equipped with a special counter which shows how many times the register was operated. Registers of this class which have special keys such as received on accounts, charge, and paid out, are equipped with special counters which show how many records of each kind were made. These counters can be reset to zero at any time when the lid covering them is unlocked and opened. The total amount of cash recorded is shown by the adding counter and can be seen at any time by unlocking a lock. This enables the proprietor to know accurately and quickly how much money should be in the cash drawer. The total-adding counter can be reset to zero at any time by unlocking a lock and inserting a counter resetting key. A special counting mechanism which cannot be reset shows a record at all times of how many times the adding counter was turned to zero. This makes it impossible to reset the total-adding counter without detection." (from the National Cash Register Catalog, August 16, 1909)
