This is an otherwise modest edition of the first volume of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, which appeared in 1908, distinguished mainly by the inclusion of 16 breathtaking color plates by these gifted artists. This new hardcover of the most beloved of Kipling's classic stories contains all of the Detmolds' original color illustrations. The plates were scanned from a rare set of portfolio prints to insure the greatest possible fidelity. It was the FIRST COLOR ILLUSTRATED EDITION printed in the Jungle Book series. Charles Maurice Detmold and Edward Julius Detmold were English graphic artists, twins, born on 21 November 1883. They were prolific and exceptionally gifted Victorian book illustrators. Due to the illness of their father, they grew up in the care of their uncle, Dr E. B. Shuldham, who had acquired a notable collection of Japanese woodprints of plants and animals. This encouraged the twins to commence drawing animals and plants at a very early age, and resulted in a debut at the age of 13 at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters, with nature studies in the Japanese style. The Detmold's subsequently learned techniques of watercolor etching and of color printing with copper plates. SYNOPSIS The Jungle Book is a collection of stories written by Rudyard Kipling. The stories were first published in magazines in 1893–4. The tales in the book are fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle, for example, lay down rules for the safety of individuals, families and communities. Kipling put in them nearly everything he knew or "heard or dreamed about the Indian jungle." The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of an abandoned 'man cub' Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. The most famous of the other stories are probably "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi", the story of a heroic mongoose, and "Toomai of the Elephants," the tale of a young elephant-handler. Kotick, The White Seal seeking for his people a haven where they would be safe from hunters. Not only are the stories endearing, coupled with the MAGNIFICENT ILLUSTRATIONS! it is a piece of art within itself. All of the plates are splendid, but the one that strikes me personally is the one entitled Kaa the Python. It almost looks life-like in its coiled position, with its contrasting muscles perfectly highlighted by the light and shadows. The details of its covered scales or scutes of various shapes, color and sizes are beautifully sketched. "The Jungle Book" was made into a Disney animated feature film in 1967. It was the last movie to be produced by Walt Disney, who died during its production. It was inspired by the stories about the feral child Mowgli from the book of the same name by Rudyard Kipling. The movie still remains as one of Disney's most popular. It contained a number of classic songs, including "The Bare Necessities" and "I Wan'na Be Like You." Kipling, the author, was born in India and spent the first six years of his childhood there. After about ten years in England, he went back to India and worked there for about six-and-half years. These stories were written when Kipling lived in Vermont. CONDITION Published in 1909, this book is in GOOD CONDITION for its age; especially to be 115 YEARS OLD!
