Description: 1909-S Philippines Silver One Peso ANACS AU55 US Philippines Minted in San Francisco. ANACS graded this coin choice about uncirculated (AU55), but they were very conservative with that assessment in my opinion. The coin is nice, original, and dripping with luster. Is this coin a candidate for crossover and/or an upgrade? You be the judge. Many of the surviving examples of Philippine Pesos from this era are problem coins and details graded (see below). Now is your chance to own a nice, original, straight graded example. Following the Spanish-American War, the United States gained control of the Philippine Islands under the 1898 Treaty of Paris. Beginning in 1903, the United States Mint began minting coins for the Philippines using the Centavos/Peso monetary system. Coins issued under U.S. administration bear the names of both the Philippines (Filipinas) and the United States, making them popular with collectors in both countries. This also means that most TPG's will grade these coins under their US fee scale rather than the more expensive world coin tier if you are looking for a crossover or possible upgrade. It is hard to find nice Philippine Pesos from this era, because in 1942 during World War II over 16 million silver Pesos were thrown into the sea near Corregidor to avoid being captured by the invading Japanese forces. Since the war, over 10 million Pesos have been salvaged, but they are typically corroded due to being in saltwater for such a long time.
