This potogravure used the original photo and was transferred to an etching plate, then hand inked and pressed into vellum paper. Giving it an etching look rather than a photo look. Originally, 500 sets of the 20 volumes were proposed, but only about half or 227 actual sets were produced. Original photogravure were produced in Boston by John Andrew & Son. These publications document indigenous American Indian life in photography and involved a handful of individuals. Edward Sheriff Curtis published The North American Indian between 1907 and 1930.
