Description: We adore the smaller scale antique samplers as they are so easy to display either on a wall or on a shelf. This is an ancient little survivor that is sure to charm as some of Sarah's individuality shines through in this non regimented small rectangular sampler.This original 1700's cutie was wrought in England during the late 18th century, in the year 1795 to be precise. It was likely made in the classroom at a Dame school by young Sarah. The sampler was wrought on home spun linen. It features cross stitch upper case alphabet to the top 3 rows followed by numbers 1 to 11. The next two rows show cross stitch lower case alphabet followed by a blue crown. Next we see a tall blue bell flower flanked by Sarah Griffin Her Work in black thread in both cross stitch and diaper stitch. To the left of the base of the flower a love heart, to the right of the base of the flower 1795. The sampler has retained its original trailing strawberry border design.See a similar 1785 example on page 60 of The Book Of Samplers by Marguerite Fawdry and Deborah Brown.Housed behind glass in stained wood frame.Measuring: Frame width 6 ½ inch (16.5 cm) by height 8 ¼ inch (21 cm). Aperture width 5 inch (13 cm) by height 7 inch (18 cm).Condition: This is a genuine 1700s example, not a modern reproduction, therefore it does show its age in places. Please study the images. There are some holes that have been sympathetically backed with linen. These areas are - top border centre, upper case letters G and H, lower case X and Y, to the right of the bottom blue bell, below the date. Fading to the silk letters, loss to the name Sarah and faint red vertical stain to the centre of the sampler.
