Description: ILLUSTRATION FOR "LA MARCHE A L'ETOILE" (The procession to the stars) ORIGINAL 1899 LITHOGRAPH HENRI RIVIERE (French 1864-1951) Well listed painter, designer and lithographer. Unsigned - but the attribution is cast-iron solid, as it was first published in the 1897 publication "La Marche a l'Etoile" - Mystere en 10 Tableaux first published in 1890 by Enoch & Cie in Paris for which Riviere was the dedicated illustrator. The work featured a poem and music by Georges Fragerolle. This scene is one of a series of 10 lithographs based on drawings which Riviere composed for the publication. This impression was published in "The Studio", London in 1899. The all-important blindstamp of "The Studio" is at lower right, below the image line. I am including part of the inscribed original tissue-guard (which was stained and damaged) just to further authenicate the item. Main image measures 5.75 x 8.25 inches. Total sheet measures 8 x 11 inches. Condition/Technical : Very good. Lovely muted colours and tones that only these late 19th century lithographers could create, and which "The Studio" took to a whole new level. A good, strong evenly inked impression, attractively printed on off-white wove art paper. "The Studio" Magazine was a lavishly-produced and pre-eminent art journal. A showcase for artists to have their works on paper featured. It took lithography to an entirely new level of excellence. In its early years the editors commissioned graphic works from leading artists, but as the popularity of the journal increased, artists were keen to offer their works for inclusion. in such a superb showcase publication. Continental artists, and "rising stars" from UK were also well represented. We can count such luminaries as Beardsley, Whistler, Waterhouse, Khnopff, LePere, Nicholson etc. etc. just to name a few amongst the contributors. The print run was about 3,000.
