Description: Vatican - Holy Cross Pro Ecclesia and Pontifice 1888 – Silver Medal Medal measures approx. 42 mm x 42 mm. The Holy Cross Pro Ecclesia and Pontifice is a distinction whose translation means: for the church and for the pope. It is also known as the Cross of Honor. It can be attributed to members of the clergy as well as to male and female laity. The cross was offered by Pope Leo XIII on July 17, 1888 on the occasion of his priestly Golden Jubilee. Initially, the distinction was only for those who had deserved the celebrations. It is only in 1898 that the decoration becomes permanent. The Cross of Merit is carried on the left side of the chest.It consists of a quartered cross of four fleurs-de-lis. In the middle is a medallion representing the bust of Leo XIII and the inscription: "LEO XII P.M. ANN X". The cross is adorned with comets that recall, with the lilies, the weapons of the founding Pope. The reverse of the medal bears the papal emblem and the inscription: "PRO ECCLESIA et PONTIFICE".On the reverse of the cross, one reads: "PRID. Cal. Ian. 1888 ".
