Description: Book Description: Hon. Littleton Waller Tazewell Under the Signature of “A Virginian”: A Review of the Proclamation of President Jackson of the 10th of December, 1832, in a Series of Numbers Originally Published in the “Norfolk and Portsmouth Herald.” Norfolk: J. D. Ghiselin, 1888, 112 pages. Gilt title on brown boards. Scuffing to boards along the spine. Tight binding and clean pages throughout. Over all a very good copy. Originally published in 1832 at the height of the Nullification Crisis as a pamphlet and later reprinted in hardcover in 1888. Tazewell argues that Jackson’s denial of South Carolina’s power to nullify the Tariffs of 1828 and 1838 repudiates Virginia’s “fundamental truths of constitutional law.” He rails against what he feels to be “political heresies” that under the “doctrines of the new ultra Federal School” States “were never sovereign” and that by joining the Union they “surrendered any part of their sovereignty.” An important argument in the controversy over State’s Rights.
