Description: A letter dated May 30, 1885 from H.B.F. Macfarland to Hon. Stanley Woodward. The letter is on stationery from The Philadelphia Record, a newspaper, specifying the paper's Washington, D.C. branch office. The letter is written on a single sheet of paper measuring about 9 7/8" x 8 1/8", folded in half to create four sides (pages). Only the first two sides contain writing. The paper is watermarked "The American / Linen Paper." The letter concerns President Grover Cleveland's appointment of Wendell Abraham Anderson (1840-1929) as Consul General in Montreal. Anderson would serve two terms in that office, from 1885-1889 and 1893-1897. "Bayard," mentioned in the letter as having been consulted, was Cleveland's Secretary of State, Thomas Francis Bayard (1828–1898). The letter's author, Henry Brown Floyd Macfarland (1861 – 1921), was an American newspaper reporter and, later, politician. Prior to public service, he worked as a newspaper reporter, becoming chief of the Washington bureau of the Boston Herald in 1892. From 1900 to 1910, Macfarland served as a member and president of the D.C. Board of Commissioners (the equivalent of D.C. Mayor). He also served as president of the National Parks Association, and as a member of the Washington Board of Trade and the Chamber of Commerce. The letter's recipient, Judge Stanley Woodward (1833-1906) was a judge in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania from 1880 to around 1900. The letter reads as follows: The Philadelphia Record 1420 Penna Ave. Washington, D.C. May 30, 1885 My dear Judge Woodward: It was just as I supposed. The selection of Anderson was the President's own act. Bayard was of course consulted but the President made the appointment. Anderson has been Chairman of the Democratic Central Committee of Wisconsin for years[,] is noted for his "shrewdness and reticence" and stands very high in the estimation of his state. Nothing can be said against the appointment. Command me at all times Yours in haste H.B.F.
