Click images to enlarge Description This is an original copy of of a hard cover book titled "The Water World" by Prof. J.W. Van Dervoort in 1885 by Union Publishing House New York. It is profusely illustrated and was sold only by subscription. It is 512 pages and about 6" x 8-1/2" in size. This book contains very detailed and some of the earliest information about our oceans and seas during the heart of Victorian times. There are numerous engravings of ocean creatures and objects of interest throughout. It would be an Oceanographers dream to own a copy of this as a reference. Condition is very good with some finger marks on some pages. There is a tape repaired tear on a foldout map of The Circumpolar Stations between page 60 and 61. Surprisingly nice condition for it's age. Gold gilding on cover and spine, and wonderfully embossed high end cover with lighthouse, anchor, sea creatures, and ships! Signed page presenting this to a granddaughter in 1885! Weight is almost 2 lbs. Ships from our smoke free home.
