(BAL 3411): First edition, First State Intermediate B: with no tailpiece on p. 441 (removed at the request of Mrs. Clemens who considered it morbid) and with caption The St Louis Hotel on p. 443. In fair condition. Moderate wear to extremities with scuffing along corners and edges. Small patch of staining at bottom edge of front board. Gilt rubbed but intact. Spine abraded with fraying to head and tail. Head is chipped with some loss, both ends crushed. Rear board afflicted with dampness staining and rippling at bottom edge. Small brown age stain on the fore edge at rear signatures. Small tear to front gutter at top edge of pastedown. Free of ownership or inscriptions. Front gutter tender with slight offsetting from frontis onto title. Lightly toned throughout, as to be excepted. A few instances of scattered age staining and foxing. Rear signature afflicted with dampness stain at the bottom edges, not affected text. Some rippling has occurred in the text as a result. Instances of finger soiling in the margins.
