John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) was an American geologist who is best know for his 1869 expedition down the Colorado River passing through the Grand Canyon, where his team faced many hardships as he documented the geology of the canyon for the first time. An expedition that he repeated in 1871 and published in his book, The Exploration of the Colorado River of the West and Its Tributaries (1875). He later served as the director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institute in 1879 before being appointed by President Garfield as the director of the US Geological Survey from 1881-1894. Captain Clarence Dutton (1841-1912) began to work for Powell in 1875 and for the US Geological Survey from 1879-1891. While working for Powell, he continued the exploration of the high plateaus of Southern Utah and Arizona mapping and documenting the geology of the region. From 1875-1877 he and his team mapped over 12,000 square miles along the Colorado and Green Rivers and their tributaries which included the areas that would later be designated as National Parks including Canyonlands, Bryce, Zion and the Grand Canyon. He published his findings in Powell’s Second Annual Report of the USGS to the Secretary of Interior, 1880-1881, which is from where this print originates. A year later, his findings were published in much more detail in the USGS Monograph, Tertiary History of the Grand Canyon District (1882). Although Dutton created many of his own prints for these publications, he also relied on earlier illustrations from Powell’s expeditions.
