1880s SV of Century PLANT by VICTORIAN House in LOS ANGELES CA by ELLIS & Son

Description: Stereoview photograph (oversized, cabinet) of a large Victorian house and gardens in Los Angeles, California, by Ellis & Son, circa 1880s. The imprint on the front reads Ellis & Son, Landscape Photographers, Los Angeles, Cal., P.O. Box no. 200. The view is identified on the reverse as Century Plant, Los Angeles, and shows a tall Gothic Victorian house rising up above trees and bushes in a well tended yard with one tall plant towering over the scene at center. There’s additional ink writing on the back, partly obscured that reads I…ith Freds Lane, Showing, Orange Tree, Pepper “, Century Plant in Bloom. The very tall stalk at center belongs to the spiky century plant below and appears and then blooms only at the end of its life. Treadwell & Darrah give the years of the partnership as 1881 to 1886 but note only one view of a banana tree. The stereoview is in only good condition with light to moderate wear and soiling. The edges and corners of the mount are chipped, there is glue and paper residue on the reverse, and a very light crease runs vertically down the center. The photographs exhibit good or better tonal range and show good better detail. A nice architectural view and early Los Angeles CA image!
