Description: Ayers was one of the most successful patent medicines of the 1800s and the Sarsaparilla was the flagship product after its introduction in 1859. Ayer’s business success lay not in the efficaciousness of his medicines, which in most cases were not even effective as palliatives, but more so in his advertising. His company distributed tens of millions of almanacs promoting its medications in more than twenty languages, not to mention colorful trading cards, newspaper advertisements, and shorter pamphlets promoting its wares. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla claimed to cure a plethora of diseases and maladies, marketed as a universal cure for at least 25 health conditions. These disorders included edema, female weaknesses, rheumatism, tumors, neuralgia, blood impurities, and syphilis in addition to promoting energy and strength. Ingredients in the product included sarsaparilla root, mandrake, and yellow dock herb, and 26% alcohol. Ayers disappeared with the pure food and drug act in 1907. This is a wonderful example standing 8 ¼” high and 2 ¾” across in a rich aqua. The post mold base dates it to the 1880s. There are indented panels on 4 sides all boldly embossed “AYERS COMPOUND EXT SARSAPARILLA LOWEL MASS U.S.A.”. The glass is heavy and inconsistent with bubbles and flaws with an applied top. It is in dug condition with a couple of hazy patches, but I think these enhance its age and beauty and no other damage. This is a great addition to your collection.
