Description: This raw 1877-CC US Trade Dollar bears about a dozen oriental chop marks on both the obverse and reverse. Collectors of chop marked trade dollars recognize the 1877-CC as a very tough date, with a current population of only 53 numerically graded examples. Unique about this host is the range of easily recognizable Chinese characters, including "呑" or "tun" meaning "eat", "昌" or "chang", "百" or "bai" meaning "hundred", and a very nice "桐" relief chop on the reverse. 桐 is understood as the name of an exotic oriental tree native to China (look up Paulownia trees). The trees were introduced to North America in 1844. Allegedly, its fruits were also used as packaging material for goods shipped from East Asia to North America, leading to Paulownia groves where they were dumped near major US ports. As such, this chop tells another side of the story of the US-China trade in which this coin was an essential part. One chop on the obverse near Liberty's left forearm looks like a mirror image of a $ sign. The obverse shows signs of altered surfaces/environmental damage while the reverse is in nice VF/XF details condition. Thanks for looking and please feel free to ask any questions.
