Description: 1867-S Half Eagle, Choice XFA Rarity in High Grade1867-S $5 XF45 NGC. In 1867, half eagle coinage at San Francisco surpassed that of Philadelphia 29,000 to 6,870 pieces, but the 1867-S coin is only slightly more plentiful. PCGS is bold and estimates that fewer than 100 coins are known, despite that service and NGC listing a combined certified population of 158 coins, which likely includes resubmissions (3/18). This issue appears at auction about twice as frequently as the 1867. But a major difference between the two issues of this year is that the San Francisco coin is most often found in the VF to XF grade range, whereas the Philadelphia coin appears most often in XF and AU condition. The protected areas of this Choice XF 1867-S display satiny luster with overall bright straw-gold color. Myriad small abrasions pepper the surfaces on each side. Census: 16 in 45, 25 finer (3/18).
