Description: Farragut and Our Naval Commanders. By J.T. Headley and printed in New York City by E.B. Treat & Co. 1867, 609 pp, 9.25” x 6.25”, 8vo, hardcover black cloth rebind. In good rebound condition, with minor rubbing and wear to the plain and wordless binding. Hinges remain in good condition and text block is bound well. Sticker stating “Bequest of the Hon. Simon Cameron” on front pastedown. Occasional black-and-white illustrations throughout, including a frontispiece of Farragut, battle scenes, and portraits of Union officers. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A nicely rebound copy that primarily focuses on the service of Admiral David Farragut (1801-1870), who is most famously known for commanding Union forces during the Battle of Mobile Bay. From the personal collection of Simon Cameron (1799-1889), a Pennsylvania senator, statewide Republican Party boss, and Secretary of War during the Civil War. Cameron’s corruption and heavy influence helped hand Abraham Lincoln the 1860 Republican nomination, along with political support he needed during the Civil War. Also includes an advertisement for The Lost Cause: A New Southern History of the War of the Confederates, an 1866 revisionist account by Edward A. Pollard that heavily influenced the Southern Lost Cause myth after the Civil War. COLU1867AJKB-0823-aj0414
