Description: 1864 | US | Two Cent | Union Shield | Large Motto | KM# 94 | Choice Fine (CD100387) Obverse: Shield in a wreath and the United States motto. Reverse: Face value in a wheat ears wreath and country name. Edge: Smooth. All but a few thousand of the nearly 20 million two-cent pieces coined during 1864 carried the enlarged motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and this became standard for the remainder of the series. The taller letters are similar in style to those appearing on the reverse. This date is rich in die-punching varieties, with only a few of them listed in The Cherrypickers' Guide. A much more complete listing will be found in books by Frank Leone and Kevin Flynn. NGC will attribute the better of these under its Variety Plus Service. Perhaps the most unusual variety for this date features a reverse die that somehow clashed with the obverse of an Indian Head Cent! In all likelihood this resulted from mint workers toying with different dies in an attempt to contrive some fancy for sale to collectors, but it may have been simply an accident during the die set-up process.
