1863 Civil War General Orders — Court Martial Cases — Chancellorsville Cowardice

Description: This printed general order was issued by the War Department in Washington, DC, on June 24, 1863. It states the details of three interesting court martial cases. Captain A. Von Puttkammer, 11th New York Battery, who faced several charges of cowardice and disobedience after allegedly marching his 3rd Corps battery to the rear during the Battle of Chancellorsville. Private Albert O. Smith, 15th Massachusetts Infantry, who was charged with falling asleep while picketing on the Rappahannock. Private Martin Troy, 34th New York, who was accused of absenting himself from duty, entering a civilian home near Rectorville, Virginia, and behaving in a “riotous, disorderly, and unsoldierlike manner,” and then striking a lieutenant of the 6th Pennsylvania Preserves who attempted to intervene. The 7-page document measures about 5” x 7 1/2”. Very good condition. Two holes in the left margin for placement in a binder. The order was among an archive of documents from the brigade staff of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 3rd Corps, Army of the Potomac (archive of Col. Thomas H. Dunham, 11th Mass.).
