Description: The History of the Earth and Animated Nature by Oliver Goldsmith, 1859, Vol 3 & 4 combined with 60 Copperplate Illustrations. Both title pages indicate 85 copperplates but that is for all 4 volumes. There is an index of the plates in the back of the book but interestingly it doesn’t match the animals on the plates. For example, the second plate in the book facing page 16 shows a Tapir, Kangaroo, and Racoon on it but the index lists Axis, Tapir, Zebra. The index also only lists 53 total plates for Vol 3 & 4 but I counted 60 plates (2 times). The leather covers are in poor condition. The boards may have been loose or detached and were taped with dark brown tape to reinforce or re-attach them. The interior is tightly bound, the pages have some foxing throughout, and I found 1 torn plate. Other general wear commensurate with age. Book is about 6 1/4" x 9" with a total of 621 pages not including the plates.
