Description: 1856 Jacob Monk Wall Map North America United States Territories Mexico A striking and surprisingly clean and sound wall map of North America showing the significant evolution of territories west of the Mississippi River following the Mexican-American War and during the height of the California Gold Rush. California's "Gold Region" is shown with great detail, albeit inaccurately, for such a small-scale map, showing the region's diggings, settlements, and geography. The Territory of New Mexico spans the entire area between California and Texas; the Utah Territory reaches from California to Kansas; the Washington and Oregon Territories extend from the Pacific all the way to Nebraska Territory at its largest extent, from Kanzas (sic) to the border of British America. Three Indian nations comprise Oklahoma: the Chah-Lah-Kee, the Muscogee, and the Chah-Ta. Many Indian Tribal lands are illustrated, as are early forts, explorations routes, and early proposed routes for the Transcontinental Railroad. Western exploration routes and early roads include the Overland mail route to California, the Santa Fe Expedition (1841), the route from Ft. Smith to Santa Fe, and the Oregon Trail. In this version of Monk's map, the Gadsden Purchase is shown with its new northern border of Sonora in Mexico and New Mexico Territory which would ultimately become the state of Arizona. Beautifully illustrated with many engraved ship illustrations and a lovely border frame. An inset map in the lower left shows the world centered on the Americas and charts various explorers' routes. 1856 Jacob Monk Wall Map North America United States Territories Mexico YEAR PUBLISHED: 1856 CARTOGRAPHER/MAPMAKER: Monk, Jacob.
