This map is attractive with a beautiful decorative border, Attractive decorative border around the edges with vignette views of Vesuvius, London, Gibraltar, Constantinople, The Pyramids of Gizeh, Niagara and Pont Neuf, Paris. The British Colonies are coloured in red, with the "Steam Route to the Colonies" coloured in blue. Original outline colour. Illustrations by Henry Warren and J.B. Allen, Published by John Tallis & Co. John Tallis (1817-1876) was a British map publisher. Born in the Midlands, Tallis came to London in the 1840s. He began a partnership with a Frederick Tallis, possibly his brother, but their collaboration ended in 1849.PROVENANCE: Published in "The British Colonies' their history, extent, condition and resources", by Montgomery Martin Esq. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: John Tallis and Company published views, maps and Atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851. The principal works, expanding upon the earlier works of Cary and Arrowsmith, include an 1838 collection of London Street Views and the 1849 Illustrated Atlas of the World. His principle engraver was John Rapkin, whose name and decorative vignettes appear on most Tallis & Co. maps.
