Offered with the associated sheet describing the artist and his work. When sold by Sir Thomas Baring (1772–1848) in London at Christie's, 2 June 1848, lot 61 the painting was described as 'a lodge in Windsor Park, with royal children descending some stone steps'. DATE PRINTED: 1850SIZE: The printed view, including titles, is approximately 24 x 19 cm, 9.5 x 7.5 inches (medium) plus wide margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by Louis Marvy (1815-1850) from an original study by Thomas Gainsborough. Thomas Gainsborough RA FRSA (14 May 1727 (baptised) – 2 August 1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. Along with his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds, he is considered one of the most important British artists of the second half of the 18th century. He painted quickly, and the works of his maturity are characterised by a light palette and easy strokes. Despite being a prolific portrait painter, Gainsborough gained greater satisfaction from his landscapes. He is credited (with Richard Wilson) as the originator of the 18th-century British landscape school. Gainsborough was a founding member of the Royal Academy.PROVENANCE: This print was published in "Sketches after English landscape painters. By L. Marvy. With short notices by W.M. Thackeray." Thackeray was an old friend of Marvy, a French artist, who took refuge in London after the chaos of 1848. TYPE: Antique etching, aquatint and soft-ground etching printed on paper.
