Description: 19th century French artist Camille Corot (1796-1875) hastily scribbled this brief note to Francis Wey (1812-1882), the writer and art critic. Apparently Corot is inviting Mr. Wey to come see a sketch and suggests coming in the morning so that he won’t miss his visit. Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot was a noted painter and printmaker, best known for his vast output of landscape paintings that simultaneously referenced the Neo-Classical tradition while advocating for painting en plein air, a technique that would become a hallmark of Impressionism. Francis Wey was a good friend of artist Gustave Courbet and is remembered for championing photography as an art form. Written in French on a folded sheet of stationery that measures: 8 1/4” x 5 3/8”. Panel on verso addressed to Francis Wey in Corot’s hand with 1846 postal cancellations. Condition: Mailing fold lines, toning around perimeter, a few small pieces of mounting tape on verso. Generally good condition with a bold signature. Shipping Notes: We ship same day via USPS upon receipt of payment before 3 PM.
