Description: Original large-format nautical chart of the South Atlantic Ocean, published by Dépôt-général de la Marine, Paris, with tracks, positions, and hand-painted elevations from a sea voyage in 1835-1836. The map measures a very generous 61 x 89.7 cm [24" x 35¼"] and was drawn by Jacques M. Hacq and engraved by François Pierre Michel. Longitude is measured from Paris, and the coverage area extends from the Equator to latitude 59° S. Numerous islands are labeled, and there is good detail on the shoreline features along the coasts of Africa and South America. A remarkable and fascinating map in its own right, but its particular distinction is its record of a sea voyage in 1835-1836, originating in Marseille, traveling south, around the Cape of Good Hope, on to the East, and then returning to France. The names of the ship and its navigator are not recorded, nor is the purpose of the trip. The tracks are drawn and the positions dated at intervals. There are three hand-painted elevations, depictions of the lay of the land, the slope and orientation of terrain as it appears from the sea. The map is titled Carte de l'Océan Atlantique Méridional (depuis l'Equateur jusqu'au 59ème degré de Latitude) rédigée par C. L. Gressier, Ingénieur, Hydrographe de la Marine, publiée par Ordre du Roi sous le Ministère de M. le Comte Jacob and dated 1834 in the cartouche. Condition: This map is in very good condition, printed on a heavy laid paper and blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. It had been lightly folded, and the outer margins trimmed a bit, to accommodate its storage aboard a ship. There are a few tiny closed tears on the edges of the outer margins, a faint spot in the upper right corner, and the navigator's marks as noted above.
