An 1834 about 3" x 5" receipt - double sided, the First Side in Spanish including "Habana, Y Marco 15 de 1834" and "Resebi del Capn de la American Frigate Tiber" and "Son $51" signed Diego Pena. The reverse, "rec this sum of fifty one dollars he within named sum for Diego Pena, Saturday 15 March 36 Jon Andrew X His Mark." Capt. Paul Ambrose Oliver (Sr.) was born in Philadelphia on April 18, 1796, and died at Fort Hamilton, Long Island, New York in June 1848 and was interred in Greenwood Cemetery. He was the eldest son of Capt. Thomas and Sarah Ambrose Oliver. On July 28, 1819, he married Mary Van Dusen, the daughter of a ship builder in Kensington, Connecticut. He was trained on board ship and was first mate of the "Nancy and Kate,” his father’s ship. He was washed overboard in 1812 at age 16. He was commissioned a Master in the U.S. Navy on Apr. 15,1814, having served in the Navy, especially at the battle of Lake Erie in 1812, commanding a vessel that took prisoners. In 1819, he was recorded as shipmaster and resided in Philadelphia. He owned and commanded the ships "Tiber," "Superior," "Trenton,” and "Louisiana"--vessels as notable in his day as Cunard Liners later were. His children were George Washington, born June 15,1820, who resided in New Orleans being active in the cotton trade; Mary Seymour, born May 15, 1823; Paulina Ambrosina, born Aug.26, 1828; Paul Ambrose Oliver (Jr.), born July 18, 1830 on board the ship Louisiana in the English Channel under the U.S. flag, was educated in Altona, Germany, came to New York and engaged in the shipping business. In service for the Union Army, he was received the Medal of Honor and was present at the surrender at Appomattox. Free Domestic Shipping.
