A view of Castle Menzies, the ancestral seat of the Clan Menzies and the Menzies Baronets. It is located a little to the west of the small village of Weem, near Aberfeldy in the Highlands of Perthshire. DATE PRINTED: 1831. SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 13.5 x 10.5 cm, 5.25 x 4.25 inches (small) plus margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by H. Jerden from an original study by John Preston Neale. John Preston Neale (1780–1847) was an English architectural and landscape draughtsman. Much of his work was drawn, although he produced the occasional watercolour or oil painting. His drawings were used on a regular basis by engravers. A major work, the Views of the seats, Mansions, Castles, etc. of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland was published in 6 volumes. PROVENANCE: Published in “Views of the Seats, Mansions, Castles, etc. of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England” (London : 1829-1831). TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on paper. The sixteenth-century castle, built as a Z-plan castle, was the seat of the chiefs of clan Menzies for over 500 years.
