Description: "Map of the County of Kent, from an Actual Survey, Made in the Years 1819 & 1820, by C&J Greenwood. Published by the Proprietors, Greenwood & Co., Regent Street, London. Corrected to the Present Period & Published July 4th, 1829. Engraved by Ja. and Joji. Neele, 352 Strand." A magnificent map of the County of Kent, one of the largest and most ornate available for collectors. A map that is not just a decorative item too: the Greenwood brothers, from Yorkshire, really did do their own survey work, which was all the more remarkable when the Ordnance Survey (with government finance) was covering very much the same ground at the same time. Inevitably the Greenwood project did not achieve its full ambition to cover all the Counties of England, though they did manage all but 6. There is something rather tragic about their work, which was undoubtedly excellent, but just badly timed: Christopher Greenwood was imprisoned for debt in 1834, and died in obscurity in 1855. Still, what a wonderful legacy they left behind, with this superb series of County Maps. An even larger version of the Kent map was issued in 1821, and this 'corrected' version appeared in 1829. It shows the county without any railways, and with what is now the eastern part of Greater London, starting at Deptford in the top left hand corner. The map has fine original handcolouring, and with its splendid title cartouche and vignette of Canterbury Cathedral, it makes a wonderful decorative item. I have other such maps from the series in my ebay shop - please see my other items. Size: the sheet measures 75cms x 64cms.Condition: The map is a little browned, but generally in good condition on thick paper. The margins are a little grubby, with a black line top right above the title. There are a few small tears in the margins, nowhere near the map image itself. They have been closed using archival tape. The only blemish on the map I can see are a few small stains on the 'keyboard' border, to the left of the Cathedral vignette. There is a little offsetting too. Good original handcolouring. The first photo shows the map within a mount, as it would look framed. The last photo shows it with the mount lifted at the front. The map will be sent without the mount. Postage: £7.00 within the UK, £16.00 to Europe, £25.00 to USA etc.I have other antique maps, books, prints etc. in my ebay shop - please see my other items.
