Description: Two volumes of essays by William Hazlitt dealing with art, literature and the politics of his age. Volume one is dated 1822 while volume two is dated 1824. While not well-received at publication, Hazlitt’s essays have come to be appreciated for his writing style and wit. This set of two volumes is in very good condition with attractive bindings in black and blue with gilt trim. Inside are striking traditional blue marbled endpapers with a bookplate of John Ferguson Kennedy inside each which seems to be a combination of the Ferguson crest (dexter hand grasping a broken spear) and the motto of the Ferguson-Kennedy’s of Bennane (Fuimus). Front board is off volume one.
