Description: I have here for sale a book entitled THE SEASON by JAMES THOMSON. With 6 engravings by RICHARD WESTALL, title vignette, season vignettes and hymn. It was published in 1824 by JOHN SHARPE, London. Printed by Charles Whittingham at the Chiswick Press. Originally printed in 1730, this famous poem by James Thomson (1700-1748) includes four parts, one for each season. Highly influential, these four seasons are the original inspiration for works by composer Joseph Haydn, painter Thomas Gainsborough, painter J.M.W. Turner and many others. Thomson is noted as the first poet to treat landscape objectively instead of romantically and the precursor of Collins, Cowper, and Gray. Bound in full leather boards. Gilt decoration and blind embossed design on the front board. Back board is firm.Board edges are rubbed, spine is worn, with some loss to title label. Front board is pulling. Marbled endpapers and fore-edges. Inscription on half title page. Spotting to the plates, otherwise text pages are generally very clean. This book is in good condition, pages are tightly bound with no loose or missing pages xxii,[1], 215pp 18cm x 11cm. Postage and packing : I know that you will be looking forward to receiving your order, each book is carefully wrapped in packing paper ( I have changed from bubble wrap to try and reduce my use of plastic) and posted in a Jiffy bag if size permitting, if not it is double wrapped in corrugated cardboard, brown paper and then securely taped.
