ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by Theodore Fielding and drawn by Benjamin Barker. Theodore Henry Adolphus Fielding (1781 – 11 July 1851) was an English painter, engraver, and author. Benjamin Barker Benjamin Barker (Pontypool 1776 – Totnes 1838), was an English landscape painter. Barker was the son of Benjamin and brother of Thomas Barker, called ‘Barker of Bath,’ resided at Bath, Somerset and between 1800 and 1821 exhibited occasionally at the Royal Academy. PROVENANCE: Originally printed by Clark in 1824 as "Benjamin Barker's English landscape scenery: . a series of forty-eight aquatint engravings / by Theodore Fielding; from original paintings in oil by ... B. Barker, Esq ". Later reprinted both with and without colour as "Benjamin Barker's English landscape scenery : a series of forty-eight aquatint engravings, by Theodore Fielding : from original paintings in oil by the late B. Barker, esq." by W. Everitt of Bath in 1843.TYPE: Antique aquatint printed on paper. An aquatint is prepared by applying resin or a similar ground to a metal plate, which is then heated, thus adhering the ground to the metal. This gives a roughness or grain to the plate which adds texture to the image. The plate is then immersed in an acid bath, which bites or etches the plate and creates areas which will hold the ink. The design is created with graduations of tone achieved through repeated acid baths combined with varnish used to stop out areas of lighter tone. Aquatint is an intaglio process, so prints made in this manner will have a platemark. Aquatinting, with its areas of tone, was often used to duplicate the feel of a watercolour. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good. Suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase.
