Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print showing "The Farmer's Return" and "Receipt for a print representing a March to Finchley.". In the former is a scene from David Garrick's play 'The Farmer's Return from London. An Interlude'; Garrick, as the farmer, seated contentedly in a cottage kitchen, smoking a long pipe and with a tankard in his left hand, relating the story of his conversation with the Cock Lane Ghost to his family; at right, the farmer's wife reacts with horror, spilling an upheld jug. The latter shows a Subscription ticket for the "March to Finchley" with an arrangement of Scottish and English weapons and musical instruments; in the centre a pair of scissors excises the Scottish lion from the royal coat-of-arms. Both by Hogarth printed on a single sheet. Printed c.1822 from the original Hogarth plates. DATE PRINTED: c.1822 using Hogarth's original plate published in 1746 (dated on the print) and 1762. SIZE: The sheet is approximately 47 x 63.5 cm, 18.5 x 25 inches (large). The prints are each approximately 23 x 19.5 cm. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by Hogarth. William Hogarth FRSA (10 November 1697 – 26 October 1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects", perhaps best known being his moral series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian". PROVENANCE: Published in 'The Works of William Hogarth, from the original plates restored by James Heath', London: Baldwin and Cradock. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are merely copies with recut plates.TYPE: Antique copper plate etching and engraving printed on paper.
