His aim was to produce a purely “scientific” and unbiased work chronicling his era—which he did from 1604, with the multi-volume Historia sui temporis. Despite (or perhaps because of) his efforts to remain objective, several parts of this work (namely the portion which discuss the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre) were banned as heretical in France. In answer, de Thou (or Thuanus, to use the Latin form of his name) followed the Historia with his memoirs to serve as a complementary work. This commentary, nicely rebound for a modern reader, was compiled by the British historian John Collinson (1757-1793), best known for his History and Antiquities of the County of Somerset.
