Description: Circa late 1800's, this is a medium-sized antique French 4-decade rosary is made of black jet glass beads and silver metal. The beads are handmade and hand-faceted. The 4-decade rosary is to say prayers for our deceased loved ones or for anybody departed who you would want to pray for. This rosary is said to commemorate the 40 hours between Christ's death and the Resurrection which is why it is a 4-decade rosary. Many cultures today still pray for the dead during the wake and after the funeral.....usually from small to big group prayers (attended by relatives, friends and neighbours or anybody) starting from the time of death to the 40th day after death......culminating to a little celebration with food and drinks (to honour the life and death of the departed loved one) and a thank you for the ones who attended the prayers for most of the 40 days. Please study the details of this scarce antique rosary: Crucifix: the crucifix is a simple T-cross frame made of silver. The corpus is soldered to the frame.The connecting ring is also soldered to make sure it is always attached to the rosary. You might find that the crucifix is a little bit small in proportion to the whole rosary......but some antique rosaries have this characteristic. Size: 30mm x 17mm Links: are made of double links in silvered metal. All links are original to the rosary. Beads: are French jet black glass beads. They are handmade, hand-faceted and therefore, are irregular in their roundness....although they all look the same. This is a late 1800's antique rosary and thus have acquired signs of use and age. There are little 'nicks' and I try to show them in the pictures. Overall, this antique rosary is in very good condition.
