Description: JOHANNES VISSCHER: ORIGINAL 17th CENTURY DUTCH SCHOOL ETCHING LANDSCAPE WITH SHEPHERDS AND DONKEYS (Hollstein 75) A landscape with a shepherd standing on the right, conversing with, and pointing at, a young shepherd riding on a donkey on a country path; a dog in the right foreground. Etching by the major Dutch master painter and engraver JOHANNES VISSCHER (circa1633-1692), after a drawing by NICOLAES BERGHEM (BERCHEM) Signed and inscribed at top right. From a series of 4 landscape/animal plates published in Amsterdam by Clement De Jonghe in 1660 (we know this from the publisher's by-line to the first plate of the series). CONDITION: Average/fair- it's clearly had a hard life! Printed on "laid" paper, trimmed to thread margins but just outside the image line area. A little frayed at the edges. Generally grubby. Signs of staining especially in the sky area. Traces of an old centre vertical crease. The reverse is a mess, with stains and traces of old glue where it was once attached by the corners in an album.
