Description: 17th Century Original Dutch Landscape Etching by ANTHONIE WATERLOO (1609-1690) The Double Cascade ( sometimes referred to as "The Double Waterfall") [Hollstein 71, only state] The double cascade (waterfall) is in the lower left quadrant. In the centre, trees grow around a large rock. To the right, a view of a valley. One of a series of 6 unnumbered landscapes, designated as H. 71-76. This one is designated as Hollstein 71. The British Museum chooses a wide date range for it - 1640 to 1690. Signed with initials in the plate, top right corner, A W f CONDITION: Very good. A good impression, well inked, with excellent tonal contrast and exquisite detail as we expect from Anthonie Waterloo's compositions. A couple of small spots (ink?) at bottom centre and just right of centre (see photos) Trimmed to narrow margins, platemark line is still visible for the greater part. Printed on "laid" paper, nicely age-toned, attached at the top to a support sheet of card. Pencil notes to the bottom of the support sheet visible to reverse. I have tried to photograph it on the lightbox, not easy but enough to see the chainlines of the paper and a paper manufacturer's watermark/filigrane. Please use the zoom facility. DIMENSIONS: 113 x 167 millimetres REFERENCES: British Museum: Sheepshanks 1663. F.W.H.Hollstein "Dutch and Flemish..." 71 (only state) Adam Bartsch, "Le Peintre-Graveur" II, 77.71 (only state) Dutuit 71 (only state) PROVENANCE: On the support sheet we have an old inscription to a Craddock & Barnard catalogue mid-1970s with an old price. I have no reason to doubt this. Makes sense. The print is presented in a way, with a windowed hinged mount that is very typical of collections in the 1970s. *Readers of a certain vintage will have fond memories of Craddock & Barnard catalogues and their shop in Museum Street, London - a Mecca and an Aladdin's Cave for Old Master print collectors in the pre-internet age, a friendly place and sorely missed. They sold over 600 items to the British Museum, just across the street.
