Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) scarce antique print "Coombe Abbey", Warwickshire. DATE PRINTED: 1795 SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 16.5 x 12.5 cm (6.5 x 5 inches) plus margins with a blank back (small). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn and published by Samuel Ireland (21 May 1744 – July 1800), British author and engraver, best remembered today as the chief victim of the Ireland Shakespeare forgeries created by his son, William Henry Ireland. In 1790 he published 'A Picturesque Tour through Holland, Brabant, and part of France made in the Autumn of 1789'. It was dedicated to Francis Grose and contained etchings on copper in aqua-tinta from drawings made by the author "on the spot." The series, which was long valued by collectors, was continued in the same form in 'Picturesque Views on the River Thames', 1792 (2 vols., 2nd ed. 1800-1); in 'Picturesque Views on the River Medway', 1793 (1 vol.); in 'Picturesque Views on the Warwickshire Avon', 1795 (1 vol.); and in 'Picturesque Views on the River Wye', 1797 (1 vol.). PROVENANCE: Published in 'Picturesque Views on the Upper or Warwickshire Avon, From it's Source at Naseby to it's Junction with the Severn at Tewkesbury with Observations on Public Buildings and Other Works of Art in its Vicinity', by Samuel Ireland 1795. TYPE: Antique sepia aquatint printed on paper. Aquatint is an intaglio printmaking technique, a variant of etching. In intaglio printmaking, the artist makes marks on the plate (in the case of aquatint, a copper or zinc plate) that are capable of holding ink. The inked plate is passed through a printing press together with a sheet of paper, resulting in a transfer of the ink to the paper. This can be repeated a number of times, depending on the particular technique. An aquatint requires a metal plate, an acid, and something to resist the acid. Traditionally copper or zinc plates were used. The artist applies a ground that will resist acid. Ground is applied by either dissolving powdered resin in spirits, applying the powder directly to the surface of the plate, or by using a liquid acrylic resist. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Coombe Abbey is a hotel which has been developed from a historic grade I listed building and former country house. It is located at Combe Fields in the Borough of Rugby, roughly midway between Coventry and Brinklow in the countryside of Warwickshire, England. The house's original grounds are now a country park known as Coombe Country Park and run by Coventry City Council. Coombe Abbey was founded as a monastery in the 12th century. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century it became royal property. In 1682, the West Wing was added by architect Captain William Winde, who also designed Buckingham House, which later became Buckingham Palace. In 1771, Lancelot 'Capability' Brown redesigned the gardens, incorporating the Coombe Pool lake. For successive generations Coombe Abbey was owned by the Earls of Craven, in whose possession the estate remained until 1923. In November 1964 Coventry City Council bought Coombe Abbey with 150 acres (0.61 km2) of land. The park was opened to the public in 1966. Please explore my ebay shop for more antique prints.
